In the words of a carer...

Crossroads Care

Most people juggle busy lives but, for carers, providing support for a relative partner or friend, the pressures can be enormous.

About Carers

Behind each person with acute illness or disability - cancer, multiple sclerosis, severe mental disability or health problems - or indeed a parent abusing alcohol or drugs you are likely to find a carer, someone who is looking after a relative or friend for no money. There are almost 6 million carers in the UK. That’s about one in ten of the adult population. Over a million of them are themselves over the age of 65. And a stunning 175,000 are young carers under the age of 18.

The pressures on carers can be intense and the effects can change their lives forever. People providing high levels of care are twice as likely to be permanently sick or disabled. Many give up an income, future employment prospects and pension rights to become a carer.

Often others fail to recognise the issues carers can face whether practical or financial. They are a 'hidden army' of workers.

About Crossroads

Crossroads schemes throughout the UK give practical support to carers of all ages, from 7 to 100 years old, and across all illnesses or problems. They give carers a break from their caring responsibilities if only for a few hours, relieving the pressure on them and enabling them to go on caring.

It started as a charity 35 years ago. Crossroads Association is the national charity supporting all Crossroads schemes in England and Wales. There are sister organisations in Scotland and Northern Ireland.

The individual schemes throughout the country provide a range of services designed to support carers practically and sensitively within their local area. And each year during Carers Week Crossroads works to promote awareness of the issues and to encourage carers to take care of themselves as well.
